Call for papers: Health and the European Union

The call for papers for UACES 2026 is now open, and EUHealthGov is continuing its tradition of hosting a themed track of EU health governance panels – join us!

Health and the European Union

Health remains high on the political agenda at EU level, with health and AI, and global health being highlighted as important in von der Leyen’s 2025 State of the Union address. The current Commission focus on competitiveness encompasses aspects of health, notably pharmaceuticals. In addition, the “European Health Union”, initially conceived as a pandemic response mechanism, remains a key theme.

‘Health and the European Union’ is a broad and topical themed track concerned both with the EU’s involvement in/impact on health, as well as how health crises have shaped and are shaping the EU. We offer a forum for presenting work at all career stages from across diverse disciplines and methodologies which engages with how EU activity shapes, and is shaped by health.

We are open to considering both in-person and virtual* sessions, and both traditional panel presentations and interactive workshops.

*NB – We also welcome virtual presentations, but please note that any panel which can be formed would take place on UACES’ designated virtual conference day on Friday 18 September 2026, and not during the main, in-person, conference in Prague (7-9 September 2026).

We welcome papers from all disciplines, including law, public policy, sociology, economics, public health, global health etc., pertaining to any dimension of EU health governance.

If you are planning to submit a paper to one of EUHealthGov’s pre-formed panels in the Health and the EU themed track, please contact euhealthgov@gmail.com by Sunday 25 January 2026.

Please send:

  • Paper title, keywords, and abstract of no more than 250 words
  • Full name, email address and institution/organisation of all authors
  • Indication of whether you are submitting to present in-person, or virtually
  • Indication of whether you are an early-career researcher (student, PhD researcher or within 3 years of viva)

We will select from these and confirm inclusion by Wednesday 28 January 2026, so that any unsuccessful submissions can be sent to the UACES general call ahead of the Sunday 1 February 2026 deadline.
