The UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) annual conference 2023 will take place on 3-6 September 2023 at Queen’s University Belfast. It will consist of a three-day in person conference in Belfast, and a one-day virtual event (11 September).
The call for paper is now open and, for the first time, there is a ‘themed track’ – Health and the EU – being organised by EUHealthGov. As with previous years, there is also a subsidy available to cover an EUHealthGov member to attend the in-person event.
Details on funding and how to get in touch can be found below.
The Health and the European Union themed track
‘Health and the European Union’ is a broad and topical theme concerned both with the EU’s involvement in/impact on health, and how health crises have shaped and are shaping the EU. We welcome work – from across scholarly disciplines and methodologies – engaged with how the EU shapes health and is shaped by health crises. Some of the kinds of work that we hope to see presented in this track include (but are not limited to):
- EU governance after/during Covid
- EU public health law and policy
- The EU as a global health actor
- The health implications of EU economic and fiscal governance
- The health implications of EU trade and/or Single Market (including, for example, in pharmaceuticals, but also in health-harming products such as tobacco)
- EU institutions, member states, and health
- Environmental health and the EU
We welcome papers from all disciplines, including law, public policy, sociology, economics, public health, global health etc., pertaining to any dimension of EU health governance.
The EUHealthGov subsidy
As part of our UACES Research Network on EU Health Governance, we are delighted to offer subsidised participation. This subsidy (for use to fund travel and/or accommodation) will provide a maximum of £200 to support an EUHealthGov member to attend the in-person conference. The subsidy is aimed at supporting one participant/paper, but can be split between two or more co-authors if preferred – please state clearly in your abstract proposal.
To apply for the subsidy, you need to:
- Be signed up to the EUHealthGov mailing list
- Be completing a PhD, or have recently submitted/defended a PhD (within 5 years)
- Confirm that you agree to writing a short blog (200 words) about your paper/presentation for the EUHealthGov website.
In the event that more than one application to the subsidy fund is received, papers will be ranked according to their fit with the conference themes and the aims of the EUHealthGov network.
If you are interested in receiving the subsidy, please indicate this in a short line at the end of your abstract submission, or via email to euhealthgov@gmail.com.
The submission process
Submission is organised via the UACES ConfTool platform (please don’t email submissions to EUHealthGov directly). Full instructions can be found on the UACES website. Authors will be able to indicate inclusion within the Health and the EU track and should indicate eligibility for the EUHealthGov subsidy in their submission, if applicable.
The deadline for submissions is midnight GMT on Wednesday 22 January.
